Fly fishing report for California rivers for July, 2018. Over all , we have great fishing conditions on all our local waters and I believe we are looking at a great August and September. Although daytime temps are warm to hot, the water is just fine and refreshingly takes the edge of the bite of a 90°+ day. Bent fly rods are part of the deal!
Fishing great. The hex hatch is in full force and runs from about 8pm to 9:45. Stripping streamers and bumps are your best bet through out the mornings. Olive leach patterns, water boatmans, and damsel flies. Dries start around 10:00am and there are lots of pmd’s hatching. Bring some emerger patterns and some hackle tip pmd’s. Use long leaders about 15’ finishing with 7x. Remember these fish are well educated and won’t take a dry that isn’t presented well.
Lower Sacramento River
Lower Sac is still fishing great. Lots of big fish are being caught every day. Best fishing is done out of a drift boat and long leaders running around 10’ to your weights with a ssg and a aaa. Cinnamon fox poopha 14 non bead tied on top, pmd flatulator, Silveys poopha in cinnamon, uv Sally’s, poxy back pmd, and zebra midges.
McCloud is starting to pick up. Fishing is good. Red copper Johns are your best bet, micro mays 18, pheasant tails 18. For dries bring some stone Fly patterns like the chubby chrinobel, elk hair caddis, and pmd’s. Don’t leave out a dry dropper set up. Streamers can be very productive, Dali lamas in blk and white and olive, and sculpin patterns. Cast to the bank and strip strip strip.
Trinity river. Salmon season has begun. The springers are here and very willing. Swing techniques can produce some fish, hobo speys I. Blk and blue, and blk and chartreuse. Most of my salmon season is conventional pulling plugs wrapped with sardines, and bouncing roe. Stretches from Douglas city down past junction city have fresh fish hanging out.
