Updated · Always-current Trinity River report

The Trinity is in good shape for late October, and the news this week is more fish. The latest shop report (10/27) says more adult steelhead are showing up every day. Most are around Junction City, but there are quite a few from Douglas City up to Lewiston too. The salmon are still spawning in big numbers.

Current Conditions

  • Flows: Lewiston releases are steady at about 315 CFS, right on the winter base flow of about 300 CFS. Douglas City reads about 330 CFS and Junction City about 360, both settled back after last week's rain bump.
  • Water temp: 49–50°F at Lewiston.
  • What it means: Low, clear water. Use a longer leader, wade quietly and keep your shadow off the runs you're about to fish.

What's Working

  • Eggs behind salmon: Trout and steelhead are holding below the redds. Run an egg pattern with a small natural nymph behind it.
  • Nymphs: Rubber-leg stones, copper-bodied attractors, olive hot spots and Prince-style nymphs in the deeper runs.
  • Swinging and skating: The fish are grabby, so cover water with a swung fly like a copper or black-and-chartreuse pattern, or skate a dry in the tailouts.

Timing & Weather

Frosty mornings Thursday and Friday, then a chance of light rain Saturday and sunny days Sunday and Monday. Highs will be in the mid 50s to mid 60s, with lows in the 30s. Start a little later, let the sun hit the water, and fish into the evening.

Regulations to Know Right Now

  • Barbless hooks are required on all anadromous Klamath-Trinity water, and only adipose-clipped hatchery steelhead may be kept. Carry your Steelhead Report Card.
  • The fly-only stretch from below the dam to the Old Lewiston Bridge is closed until next season.
  • Adult Chinook retention is closed below the Denny Road Bridge at Hawkins Bar for 2026. Call CDFW's hotline at (800) 564-6479 to check the upper river's quota. Always check current CDFW regs before you go.

Please keep your boots off the redds. Every wild fish matters.
